Computer Classes for Beginners
Cedar Mill Community Library and Cedar Mill Community Library @ Bethany offer a variety of computer classes for beginners.
These classes are designed specifically for beginners and include basic skill building and clear explanations. Classes cover a variety of topics including: Basic computer use; the Internet; E-Mail; and Digital Photography. Not every class is offered at both locations.
Registration is required for all computer classes. Space is limited. If you are interested in a class at Cedar Mill, please register at the Adult Reference Desk or call 503-644-0043 X114. To register for a class at Bethany, please call 503-617-7323.

Class Descriptions
Computer Comfort for Beginners
Beginning computer class.
Feeling confused by all of the talk you hear about computers? If so, this class is for you! Computer Comfort starts at the beginning, and covers the basics, including:
- Parts of a computer
- How to open and close programs
- How to use a mouse
Classes are held in two parts over one week, registration is required.
Internet For Beginners
Internet instruction, including techniques for using web browsers and search engine.
In Internet for Beginners, you will learn how to:
- Use a web browser
- Use a search engine
- Keep from getting lost on the Internet
This class includes hands-on demonstrations and activities to help you practice your new skills. Classes are held in four parts over two weeks, registration is required.
Email for Beginners
A basic overview of email and common pitfalls.
This class is designed for people who have email accounts and would like a basic overview.
Key topics covered in this class include:
- Composing email
- Etiquette
- Attachments
- Pitfalls such as spam and fraud
This is a two session class and registration is required.
Word Processing Skills for Beginners
This class helps students build word processing skills such as:
- Saving
- Changing Fonts
- Cut/copy/paste
- Using Tables
- Inserting Graphics
This class does not cover typing/keyboarding skills.
Classes are held in three sessions over one week at Cedar Mill and four sessions over two weeks at Bethany, registration is required.
Digital Photography for Beginners
Learn the basics of Digital Photography in this three session class.
Classes will cover the following topics.
- Camera Basics
- Photo storage
Classes are held in two sessions in one week, registration is required.
Digital Photo Editing
This class is designed for people who are interested in learning more about editing digital photos on a computer using Picasa.
Topics include:
- Editing Overview
- Cropping
- Brightening
- Red Eye Removal
This is a two session class, registration is required.
Exploring Excel for Beginners
This class will take you through the basics of Excel including instruction on:
- Cells and worksheets
- Formulas
- Charts
- Tips and tricks to make your work go faster
Students should already know how to use the mouse (both left and right buttons), how to use toolbars and menus, how to cut, paste, and move text in an application such as Word.
Classes are held in three evening sessions over one week.
Open Computer Lab Time
Need help setting up an email account or formatting your resume? Cedar Mill Community Library now has open computer lab time on Thursday afternoons, 3-5 pm. in the upstairs meeting room.
Volunteers and staff will be available for help with practicing computer skills, continuing class exercises, and answering questions related to programs such as Word, Explorer and Email.
No registration is required, but there is limited space each session. For more information, please ask at the Adult Reference Desk.
